    “动荡的股市以及原油价格改变了夏威夷，也改变了夏威夷大学。与以往这个时候不同，大家都不再谈论什么时候去拉斯维加斯度假、夏威夷大学的橄榄球队表现如何，每个人更关心的是自己的退休金、退休计划以及个人的理财组合。因为随着股市的暴跌，大家的财富严重缩水，没有人知道市场会怎样，很多教职员工已经要求推迟退休的时间。”

    安妮塔在信中告诉我，由于美国本土和日本的经济都呈现下滑势头，以旅游业为主的夏威夷的经济遭到了严重冲击，因为没人想在这个时候到夏威夷度假。由于游客太少以及信贷市场紧缩，夏威夷的两家航空公司相继宣布破产。从今年２月份开始，游轮公司将原来运营豪华海上旅游线路的轮船数量从３艘削减为１艘。

    游客减少意味着旅馆的空房率高企，大量服务人员失业，政府税收减少，对于包括夏威夷大学在内各类教育机构的经费也被大量削减。夏威夷大学已经接到通知，在政府的财政支出中，学校经费可能被削减一到两成。

    安妮塔还说，她和她丈夫比尔的生活并没有受到特别严重的影响，因为两人在股市里的投入并不是很多。比尔是一名商业飞行员，他在２００６年１２月年满６０岁退休。他很遗憾没有赶上航空公司的新政策，２００８年１月开始航空公司已经把飞行员的退休年龄推迟到了６２岁。幸好，社会保障计划可以使比尔从６２岁起就能获得固定的退休金。

    不过，安妮塔告诉我，股市暴跌还是让她过去两三年投入退休金的资金全部付之东流。“如果早知道这样，我还不如把这些钱全部消费掉！”。

    “幸运的是，我和比尔今年３月份把自己的投资组合进行了调整，我们的投资策略变得更为保守。从去年１０月份以来，股市主要指数下跌了４０％，我们投资组合的损失为１５％，上帝保佑！在市场动荡的时候，我们听取了投资顾问的建议，在市场暴跌中保持了冷静。”

    安妮塔在信末这样写道：“希望中国读者能够了解美国的情况，尤其是夏威夷的情况，希望他们有机会到夏威夷旅游。”
